Il fut blessé en 1968 à la colonne vertébrale et paralysé à vie. Le film retrace sa terrible épopée pour retrouver un sens à la vie et nous conte vingt années de l'histoire américaine. En quelque sorte la suite de Platoon réalisée avec autant de soin et la participation de spécialistes des questions de guerre.
